This picturesque and peaceful setting provides students with a tranquil environment ideal for learning, reflecting, and planning for the future. The settlement has a rich history tied to the Moravian Church.

The village takes its name from Fulnek, a town in Moravian Silesia (modern-day Czechia). Founded in 1743 by refugees and members of the Moravian Church—one of the oldest Protestant denominations—the settlement was established by individuals fleeing persecution in predominantly Roman Catholic regions. After seeking refuge in Germany, they formed their own community and eventually migrated to the UK, founding settlements such as Fulneck.

Initially, Fulneck consisted of separate buildings for men, women, and married couples, all located near the Moravian Chapel, now a Grade I listed building and one of the most architecturally significant structures in Leeds. Within a decade of the settlement’s founding, schools were established in 1753 and 1755 for boys and girls respectively, merging into a single school in 1994.

Modern Fulneck remains a single-street village built along a ridge overlooking a green valley. Many residents are still Moravians and manage a small local museum showcasing artefacts that recount the settlement’s history and the origins of the Moravian Church.

The Founding of Fulneck School

In 1753, Fulneck School was founded to provide education for the children of church ministers and missionaries. Remarkably progressive for its time, the school admitted both boys and girls. Among its early educators was John Amos Comenius, a prominent theologian, philosopher, and educator, often regarded as the “Father of Modern Education.” Comenius emphasised teaching children to think rather than simply memorise and repeat. He also published some of the first illustrated children’s books and championed the education of girls, a revolutionary idea at the time.

Fulneck School takes pride in Comenius’ legacy and continues to uphold the values and moral principles shaped by its religious roots. Students are taught to be respectful, tolerant, honest, and capable of discerning right from wrong.

A Leading Independent School Today

Fulneck School is an independent boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18.
