Her debut novel, A Woman of Substance, sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Next on leeds1.one.

Her journey began during childhood when, at the age of 10, Barbara submitted a story to a magazine. For this work, she received a small monetary reward, which she used to buy handkerchiefs and a green vase for her parents. Her mother, who encouraged her to read, played a significant role in shaping Barbara’s love for writing, as noted by The Guardian.

Childhood and Early Years

Barbara Taylor Bradford was born in the Leeds suburb to Freda and Winston Taylor. Her father worked as an engineer. She was the only surviving child in the family, as her elder brother, Vivian, passed away from meningitis before her birth.

Following her first small victory in having her story published, Barbara became determined to pursue a career in writing. She aspired to be a reporter. At the age of 15, she left school and began working as a typist for the Yorkshire Evening Post. Persuading the editor to give her a chance, she secured a reporter role. By the age of 18, she was editing texts, and at 20, she was writing reviews for the London Evening News.

For years, Barbara attempted to write fiction but struggled to complete her drafts. Initially exploring detective fiction, she soon realized it wasn’t her calling. Eventually, her first novel, A Woman of Substance, achieved extraordinary success, paving the way for 38 more novels that resonated deeply with readers in the UK and the US.

Personal Life and Inspiration

Barbara Taylor Bradford’s husband, American film producer Robert Bradford, played a pivotal role in her life. He was her inspiration, partner in all her ventures, and supported the screen adaptations of her literary works. The couple shared over 50 years of marriage until Robert’s passing in 2019.

The Bradfords lived a life of luxury, which occasionally led to gossip about their extravagant lifestyle. Despite this, Barbara auctioned 40 pieces of jewelry in 2013, gifted by her late husband, to support two family members in England.

Although the couple had no children due to Barbara’s miscarriages, she devoted herself to her writing career and being a supportive wife. Her novels often center on strong, determined women achieving success independently. While embracing feminist ideals, Barbara maintained traditional femininity, admitting her husband held the leadership role in their family.

Literary Achievements

Ten of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s novels were adapted into films and mini-series, with her husband Robert assisting in production. Five television adaptations were re-released on DVD in the UK in September 2008, including:

A Woman of Substance

Hold The Dream

To Be The Best

Act of Will

Voice of the Heart

Barbara’s debut novel, A Woman of Substance, had a staggering global print run of 32 million copies. Remarkably, Barbara estimated the book’s weight at seven and a half kilograms rather than counting its pages. Initially, an entire chapter focused on Blackie O’Neill during World War I was cut by her editor but considered for inclusion in a 40th-anniversary edition.

Beyond romance novels, Barbara authored several non-fiction works on topics such as housekeeping, lifestyle, and religion. Her literary repertoire includes 39 novels, all of which became bestsellers, with cumulative sales exceeding 92 million copies. Her books have been sold in over 90 countries and translated into 40 languages.

Despite her advancing age, Barbara Taylor Bradford continues writing, using either pen and paper or an electric typewriter. The passing of her beloved husband was a significant emotional blow, but she remains committed to honoring his wish that she keep creating. Now a resident of New York City, Barbara became a US citizen in 1992 and continues her remarkable literary journey.

Barbara Taylor Bradford, born on May 10, 1933, in Leeds, is a determined, energetic, and incredibly hardworking woman who achieved phenomenal success and recognition in literature.
